Job Title:            Senior Tunnel Engineer
Reporting to:   Managing Director, Technical Director
Hours:                  Up to 44 hours / week
Location:           Canada, Toronto, in office 5 days / week

Purpose of the Role: 

As the Senior Tunnel Engineer, you will be working in a dynamic and technically focused engineering team and will be involved in all aspects of our projects. You will be working on projects providing your expertise in underground design such as SEM tunnelling, SOE, TBM tunnelling, temporary works and geotechnical design as well as providing support and guidance to team members. You will be responsible for leading the timely production of key deliverables from concepts, proposals, designs, drawings, reports and analyses in pre-set timeframes. There will also be the opportunity to be involved in tender support and new business activities to help support the growth of the company. The role carries technical and commercial responsibility and you will be working directly with and for the Partners of the company.

Job Description:

  • Developing engineering concepts, scope descriptions, and effort estimates for projects.

  • Developing reference designs, reviewing ground conditions, and rock and soil parameters. 

  • Developing excavation and support sequences for tunnels, caverns, shafts, and adits.

  • Writing reports and specifications to communicate project-specific SEM design, construction principles, and processes with clients, owners, and third parties. 

  • Empirical tunnel design, settlement assessment analysis, and FE Modelling.

  • Leading the internal communication of the design principles between the engineering and CAD teams. 

  • Providing constructability review, and construction input to design process for on-site projects.

  • Representing the company and presenting the design advance in workshops with clients and owners.

  • Acting as representation of designer on site leading the RES-process.

  • Leading and participating in Dr Sauer & Partners quality management system accredited to ISO 9001:2015 and adhering to the Design Management Plan.
     

Required Skills & Expertise:

  • Ability to promote strong working relationships across the team and to draw on one another’s knowledge and diversity to strengthen the team.

  • Self motivated and able to work under own initiative.

  • High degree of written and oral communication.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts and ideas in a clear manner.
  • Ability to develop, impact and influence technical solutions to challenging engineering problems.

 

Key Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a master’s degree in civil engineering or similar.
  • P.Eng license in Civil Engineering in ON, and other provinces.
  • Experience of leading and project managing high profile design projects.
  • Excellent understanding of the structural behaviour and theory of SCM tunnelling.

  • Experience in analytical software.

  • Strong analytical and structural background in geotech, piles and tunnelling.
  • The legal right to work in Canada is essential.
