Description
The Brucetown Road Tunnel, built in the 1960s, is an existing inter-quarry tunnel at Carmeuse’s plant in Winchester, VA, supplying lime and limestone. The tunnel crosses beneath Brucetown Road (Route 672), in a Northeast-Southwest direction. The tunnel length is approximately 410’ and its irregular tunnel cross section is approximately 45’ wide and 59’ high at North Portal and approximately 33’ wide and 52’ high at South Portal. In recent years the inter-quarry tunnel, and two quarries were used as a water reservoir. Carmeuse decided to dewater the reservoir, to widen and rehabilitate the existing tunnel, and to utilize the tunnel accessing the quarry north of Brucetown road to haul material using large mine hauling trucks.

Limestone with Calcite veins, Foliated, Fractured, Hard Rock (R5), Conchoidal fracture, no visible fossil content.
