Bank Station Capacity Upgrade Tunnelling Completes!

Tunnelling works were successfully completed at Bank Station Capacity Upgrade (BSCU) on the 10th of February.  This was made possible thanks to the excellent delivery of the works from the Dragados team and collaboration of the wider project team. The innovative design together with the successful execution of program made this delivery possible, and Dr. Sauer & Partners is delighted to have been involved from the start of the project right through to the milestone of tunnelling completion.

After excavating more than 71,000 m3 of soil since the SCL works began back in February 2017, the last excavation was completed five years later. More than 1,330 m of tunnels have been constructed. This includes the creation of a new ticket hall, diversion of the southbound Northern line and the formation of a new southbound platform, transforming the existing southbound platform into a new concourse and passage area, new large cross passages linking the newly formed concourse to the new southbound platform, 12 new escalators, two new moving walkways and three new lifts. 

During this time, the Dr. Sauer & Partners SCL Designer’s Representative team has been supporting Dragados by leading and participating in the Daily Review Meeting and delivering the Required Excavation Support Sheet (RESS), cooperating and co-ordinating the Assured SCL design with all team members onsite including London Underground (LU), incorporating changes to the design required by the construction team, and validating design assumptions among other activities. 

When completed, improvements to London’s third busiest interchange station will become available to the public. Bank/Monument station will serve around 100,000 passengers over a three hour morning peak. Thanks to everyone’s involvement, this outstanding project was delivered safely and all involved can proudly leave behind this incredible legacy for future generations.
