Dr. Sauer & Partners, Dragados and LU picked up the prestigious award for Best Safety Initiative at the TfL Suppliers Awards in recognition of an innovative way of forming radial joints in sprayed concrete tunnel linings at London’s Bank Station Capacity Upgrade project. The design approach developed by Dr. Sauer & Partners completely removes the risk to the workforce by mechanising the radial joint formation in the tunnel lining and thereby avoiding personnel entering into the tunnel face and under freshly sprayed concrete. This innovation was subject to significant analysis, lengthy field trials and increased supervision and survey/testing during construction.
Dr. Sauer & Partners MD, Brian Lyons, said "The risk from concrete fall-outs can be serious. It is hugely satisfying to see a collaborative designer, contractor and client team identify a key risk and develop a joined-up solution which is now considered industry best practice and is being transferred to other projects such as HS2."
