As the UK Government reaffirms its commitment to clean, sustainable energy confirming its investment last week in Sizewell C (the proposed nuclear power station off the Suffolk coast), we’re proud to reflect on our contribution to another landmark nuclear project: Hinkley Point C in Somerset.
Working alongside Amentum and Jacobs, Dr. Sauer & Partners has been delivering Category 3 design checks for the offshore connection tunnels and associated temporary works — a critical part of the station’s cooling water infrastructure.
Hinkley Point C will feature a water intake/outfall system capable of transferring 120,000 litres of cooling water per second. This includes:
• Two 3.5 km intake tunnels, 33 m below the seabed
• One 1.8 km outfall tunnel, 24 m below the seabed
• Six offshore connection tunnels linked via vertical shafts up to 40 m deep
This two-unit, 3,200 MWe European Pressurised Reactor is set to power nearly 6 million homes, with commissioning targeted for June 2027.
Civil nuclear power remains one of the most reliable sources of low-carbon electricity, playing a vital role in the UK’s journey toward net zero. We're honoured to contribute to infrastructure that supports a more sustainable future.
