With the Crossrail or rather Elizabeth line now officially open, it is with a sense of achievement that the Dr. Sauer & Partners team looks back on the completion of such an incredible project running under central London.
Our involvement spanned from detailed design right through to design representation on site during construction, and even included Senior Tunnel Engineer, Bethan Haig singing with the TfL choir at the opening of Farringdon station!
Farringdon station was the most significant part of the project that we were involved in, which was the first station to be constructed mainly in the complex Lambeth Group formation using the SCL tunnelling method. The station also included 300m long TBM enlargements to the platform tunnel size, with an entire primary lining constructed with SFR sprayed concrete. Throughout the project, a 3D geological model was used to predict ground movement and ground water conditions.
It is great to see this new line open to the public and reminisce on what was a successful, collaborative and monumental project for the London transportation network. Congratulations to everyone involved in the project!
