Dr. Sauer & Partners’ Design Manager and Senior Associate, Dr. Ali Nasekhian presented at Cambridge University last week. Originally invited to present in 2020, the paper “Tunnelling in Urban Areas and Pile Interception Challenges – A Case Study: Bank Station Capacity Upgrade (BSCU)” was selected to be one of 12 papers presented during the postponed 10th International Symposium on Geotechnical Aspects of Underground Construction in Soft Ground.
Ali delivered the paper which was co-authored by Dr. Sauer & Partners colleagues, Dragados, TfL and Arup, and detailed the approach taken at the Bank Station Capacity Upgrade project. Existing pile foundations required load transfer structures to be installed after fully intercepting four out of 25 end-bearing unreinforced concrete under-ream piles (shaft diameters ranging from 1.5 to 1.8m) and partially intercepting 7 others. The paper addressed early stage pile interception options through to the detailed design.
