Recently, part of our Washington D.C. team had the chance to visit the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project in Norfolk, VA. Dr. Sauer & Partners has been involved in this project since early 2020, so it was great to see output of our designs up close.
The Hampton Roads Connector Partners (HRCP) have done an incredible job so far, completing the first of two 8,000-foot-long tunnels. Right now, they’re focused on the tricky task of turning the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) "Mary" inside the North Island shaft - no small feat considering the machine is 46 feet in diameter, 430 feet long, and weighs over 4,700 tons.
With the first tunnel completed, we got to walk from South Island to North Island (and back) beneath the Chesapeake Bay, the team definitely got their steps in that day!
A big thank you to HRCP for hosting us, and a special shout-out to our fantastic guide, Luke Grischow, for showing us around and answering all our questions!
