The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel Project at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel recently achieved a significant milestone when breaktrtough finally happened!
TBM, 'Chessie' reached her end destination on Northern Island at Thimble Shoal Channel after mining more than 6,300 feet. Along the way, the project had to overcome major obstacles such as mining through an old, abandoned ship anchor!
Dr. Sauer & Partners served as Engineer of Record for many of the major temporary works designs across the project (working alongside Intesca-Inarsa), including the multi-purpose steel trestle that was used to transfer 'Chessie' via barge to the artificial island.
Further updates, photos and a time-lapse video showing the breakthrough can be found at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District website. Below are a few selected photos showing the breakthrough as well as 'Chessie' being delivered to the Southern Island a few years ago.
