GO Expansion: Highway 401 and 409 Rail Tunnel Project: Twin SEM tunnels

The Highway 401 and 409 Rail Tunnel is a Metrolinx project delivered in partnership with Infrastructure Ontario.  The two new 180 m tunnels constructed under 21 lanes of one of the busiest highways in North America will provide a capacity increase on the Kitchener GO line helping to bring more frequent, all-day, two-way service on core segments of the network and even allowing for double-stacked freight.

Update from Chinatown Station

The construction of Chinatown Station is underway following the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). The SEM structures are being constructed in bedrock of the Franciscan Complex (sandstone, shale and melange) and the Colma Formation (dense sand with interbedded stiff clay).
